I don’t know…… Hmmmmm. Do you not know because you truly do not know? Or do you in fact know but say that you do not know because you are unsure, embarrassed, or perhaps feel intimidated? Should this be the case then surely only you will ever know if you know or not. Leaving all others to assume that you truly do not know. Therefore inevitably to say I don’t know even if you do know is in fact not knowing. ………………. This I know. So surely it would be better to say what you know and to know what you say to be so. Always mean what you say and say what you mean. All that I can really say about what I am trying to say is……………………. I know.

Let us see if we can break this down. On a job I was on, I worked with some guys that had been doing the exact same work for over ten years. Whenever the job superintendent would approach one of them with a question concerning the job the reply would almost always be “I don’t know man, ask him” pointing to me that has only been doing these jobs with them for about two years. Although I have well over 40 years in the trade I had only been with this crew and company a short time. In all reality, they knew they simply didn’t want to assume the responsibility of knowing. If in fact, they didn’t know it makes one wonder just what in the heck had they been doing the past 10 plus years? Then when the job superintendent continues to come to the one person that was pointed out as knowing the others becomes offended because he isn’t the boss over them and wonders why they don’t come to any of them. After all, they have been doing this longer than I have. It’s simple enough… YOU said you didn’t know, they need and want to deal with someone that DOES know. So if you know say that you know and do what needs to be done. If you’re going to pass the buck don’t cry when you don’t get any change. Say what you mean and mean what you say. If you say I don’t know to dodge responsibilities you automatically label YOURSELF as the un-knowledgeable one and should accept the consequences that come with not knowing. If you know and say that you know you should expect the consequences of knowing and be prepared to have that knowledge put to the test. I hope this shines a little light on the original post Thank you
