Understanding You, Understanding Me

Understanding……you would think it to be simple as if comprehending what we read and or hear. Perhaps so, should the context remain simplified excluding any and all variables that would otherwise distort what we deem the norm. Define norm, and depict variables if you will. When our smile and greeting are met with a frown, turned-up nose, and ignored. In its simplest form, we would understand that person to be rude, mean, and angry. How can you truly know the battle they are fighting? How can you truly know the hurt they are hiding? How can you truly know that they even saw or heard you because they were lost deep in thought trying to understand their own personal dilemmas? You cannot, yet surely you know it is possible because you have been there yourself at some point in your life. When we love with all that we are or will ever be, pour our hearts and souls out into the trusting hands of another, only to have it crushed. Tears in your eyes looking into theirs you see no compassion, no sympathy, and no pain. You look for answers, trying to understand. You look for excuses somewhere to cast blame. Your relentless efforts are futile for the life of you, you cannot understand why. Equally, as you cannot understand another’s love for the one you disapprove of. Love nor the lack of it is not for none but that one to understand, experience, or not as it has always been and will always be. We see and hear of horrendous crimes, the loss of lives be it man, woman, child, or domestic pets the possibility of understanding eludes us all. After all, how can one take the life of innocence without remorse? Everything that we are is what we have allowed ourselves to be molded into. Absolutely nothing means any more than we choose to believe that it means. Nothing in our lives represents who we are, what we believe, how we act, dress, or think but ourselves. We are each responsible for the choices we make including whether or not we let anything presented to us in any form define who we are or how we will react to any given situation. Understanding what someone else does, why they do it, how they feel, or why they don’t would most definitely be an impossible task when we have fallen short of understanding the same about ourselves…. Try understanding that.
