Fifty years ago we were all grateful for the friends next door, or just down the road. Sometimes we even had friends across the country which we contacted by phone or US mail. Time progressed and social media came into play, connecting people all over the world that otherwise may have never met. Social media has been responsible for bringing couples together forevermore and relatives in touch that have been apart for years. Social media has also brought many hardships, hurt feelings, and pain. But we can’t blame social media for these hardships, no more than we can blame a gun for killing. I’m sure opinions will vary as they so often do. As for myself, well, I am a huge fan of social media. I have met some of the most beautiful, caring, and loving people anywhere, on social media. People I would have and could have never known, even people I have never, and may never meet personally. Yet they are some of the most treasured friends anyone could ever ask for. No doubt social media can consume us and take us away from other important tasks or people in our lives. Still, it is not social media, no more than a television program, or a good book. It is our own lack of self-control and discipline. Social media in my opinion are phenomenal ways of bringing people together. I have amazing friends from all over the world, every race imaginable, various religious beliefs, various political beliefs, different climates, time zones, ways of life, foods they like. I could go on and on. The one thing that stands out about them more than anything else. Like me, they base their friendship with me on my own merits. Not on my skin color, my hair, my religion, or political beliefs, but just on me. We are and will always be good friends for this reason alone. We see the best in each other, our hearts…
