Everyone seems to be real big on criminal background checks these days. So let’s look at it from another perspective. Your chances of hiring a criminal are probably greater when you hire a person that has NO criminal records. There are many, many people out there from ALL walks of life, that are guilty of the very crimes you are concerned about most. There are people out there doing drugs, stealing, abusing women, children, and animals every day that have never been caught. You won’t find anything bad about them in a criminal background check, those only work when they have been arrested and found guilty of a charge. You could very well be hiring a murder, a rapist, a fugitive from the law that jumped bail before he was found guilty in a court of law. The gunman that killed 58 people in Las Vegas and wounded hundreds more had no criminal records, was part of no cults, was not politically outspoken, nothing out of the ordinary. So with all this in mind, think about this too. Most all of us have made mistakes in our lifetime, done things wrong, some even illegal and not been caught, or maybe got caught and learned a very valuable lesson. You know, kind of like when we were kids and got a spanking, we sure didn’t want any more of that, so we wouldn’t do it anymore. This same logic is applied in our adult lives as well. When we break the law, we are punished, the society hopes that our punishment will encourage us not to do anything wrong anymore. For the most part, this works very well. The setback is the “Criminal background check”. People fresh out of prison, or jail, feeling they have paid for their crime and are ready to move on with their lives soon find out they have only begun to pay. They can’t find jobs to support themselves and their families because of the background checks. Feeling hopeless and desperate they soon resort to whatever means they can find to take care of their families, even if it means breaking the law. You can’t possibly understand that if you have never been desperate, never had your children starving looking for you to feed them. It doesn’t have to be that way. Instead of relying on a background check, hire and treat people based on their own merit. Which would make more sense? Hiring someone that got in trouble, got punished, and most likely learned their lesson and just want to start over and have a life. Or hire someone that you really know nothing about, that may be a criminal that is slick, he or she has never been caught, never been in trouble. They are confident that they are good and will get away with whatever they do. You could be their next victim. If you must check something out, check out any references they may have. The only way they can be any good at whatever they do is to have experience. They had to get that experience somewhere, so talk to whomever that may be. If you really must judge someone, judge them on what you know, what you see and experience. Can you in all honesty say that you have never done anything that could be considered illegal? Never wrote a check when you knew there was not enough money in the bank to cover it? Never exceed the speed limits? Did you ever get an item the cashier overlooked and didn’t charge you for, and not return it? It doesn’t matter how small or simple you may think it is, breaking the law is breaking the law. Check this out….. NOT any of us are perfect and can say we NEVER break any laws.
